Social media giants Instagram and Facebook encountered widespread technical glitches, leading to disruptions in user access and functionality across the platforms. Users around the globe experienced difficulties in logging into their accounts, posting content, accessing profiles, and sending messages.
Users encountered difficulties loading apps, sending messages, and refreshing search feeds on both Facebook and Instagram. The outage was significant, with over 300,000 reports recorded on Facebook and more than 20,000 on Instagram, as reported by the website. Many users found themselves unexpectedly logged out of their Facebook accounts and unable to log back in due to the outage.
Meta spokesperson Andy Stone acknowledged the issue, stating, “We’re aware people are having trouble accessing our services. We are working on this now.”
Downdetector, which aggregates status reports from various sources including user submissions, tracked the outages. It’s possible that the actual number of affected users could be higher than reported.
Meta has remained silent regarding the global outage, leaving users uncertain about when the servers will resume normal functions. While WhatsApp, another platform under Meta’s ownership, hasn’t reported any outages, the newly launched competitor, X rival Threads, is experiencing downtime as well. In just minutes after the outage, users flocked to Elon Musk’s X platform, causing #Instagramdown, Facebook, and Mark Zuckerberg to trend on social media. Memes related to the global server issue are circulating widely among users.
The outage prompted a surge in reports and complaints from frustrated users across various social media platforms, notably Twitter, where individuals voiced their concerns and shared their experiences. Both Instagram and Facebook acknowledged the issue, assuring users that their technical teams were actively working to address the problem and restore normal service as soon as possible.
The incident underscores the significant impact that social media platforms have on modern communication and digital interactions.
