In remarks made by Murugavel J, the founder, and CEO of matrimony.com, it was disclosed that only eight of the company’s applications, including Bengali Matrimony, Marathi Matrimony, Tamil Matrimony, Jodii, and Bharat Matrimony, were restored on Sunday, contingent upon their compliance with Google’s terms.
On Sunday, a few additional applications resurfaced on the Play Store after adhering to Google’s billing policy, while the Internet and Mobile Association of India (IAMAI) voiced concerns over the multitude of apps that remained delisted. Murugavel J reiterated that only eight applications from the company’s repertoire had been reinstated, underscoring the necessity of accepting Google’s terms.
Despite this, a significant majority of the company’s 100-plus applications are yet to be reinstated on the Play Store, Murugavel J highlighted. He emphasized the lack of action on Google’s part to reinstate all delisted apps, despite clear directives from the government regarding billing policies, as conveyed to PTI.
In response to Google’s actions, IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw denounced the app removals, asserting that such actions were intolerable and that startups would receive the necessary protection. The friction between Google and certain Indian apps escalated after the tech giant removed specific applications from its Play Store in India, citing disagreements over service fee payments. This move prompted a backlash from affected apps and prominent startup figures, who criticized Google’s decision.
IAMAI condemned the ongoing delisting of Indian apps, deeming the measures unfair and disproportionate, especially considering the ongoing legal proceedings. The association highlighted the apparent discrimination in Google’s actions, contrasting them with its practices in other jurisdictions, where preferential treatment is afforded to app developers amid legal or legislative developments.
IAMAI expressed grave concern over the continued delisting of apps, anticipating discussions between the government, Google, and relevant app representatives to address the issue on Monday.
