Following the SC’s rejection of the HC’s temporary order, the Karnataka government decides to postpone the board exam for Classes 5, 8, and 9.

The Registered Unaided Private Schools Association appealed the division bench of the High Court’s March 7 interim ruling, and the court granted their requests.

On Tuesday, the Supreme Court annulled the Karnataka Government’s order to postpone the board exams for Class 5, Class 8, and Class 9 for the State board syllabus. The order has been set aside by the Supreme Court and the matter has been referred to the division bench. The school education department has said that the government has postponed the board exams.

On March 7, the Supreme Court stayed the order of the Karnataka Division of the Division bench which had issued an interim order suspending the Karnataka State Board’s decision to hold Board Examinations for Class 5, Classes 8, Class 9, and Class 11.

However, the court allowed the appeal filed by the registered unaided private Schools Association challenging the interim order of the division bench which had issued the order on March 7 and stayed the order.

According to the Supreme Court, the board examination for class 11 has already been completed and the board exams for class 5, class 8 and class 9 have already begun (March 11) and will end on March 18.

In the previous academic year, the Karnataka State Examination and Assessment Board instituted a “centralized annual examination” for classes 5 and 8. In September 2023, the government notified classes 9 and the first PUC to implement the same system.

The notification states that no student will be held in detention if they do not pass the examination. In this case, the school will only inform the student and their parents about the result. The board will conduct an additional examination at college level if a student does not get a passing mark for the first time in the PUC examination.

The private schools association claimed that RTE requires continuous and comprehensive assessment for Classes 5, 8, and 9 to be conducted at the school level and not as a board examination. CCE means that the examinations are conducted at the school level, the students are evaluated at the school level and their learning abilities are assessed. However, if the question papers and assessment are done at the board level or taluk level, it affects the child’s learning curve.
