Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale asserted that his plan to rename eight Mumbai railway stations had received approval from the Maharashtra government. Renaming eight local railway stations in Mumbai after British colonists will now be proposed to the Center, according to the MP.
Eight local railway stations in Mumbai will now go by new names, all from the British era, according to the Maharashtra administration led by Eknath Shinde.
Shiv Sena MP Rahul Shewale has announced that the Maharashtra government has approved his proposal to rename eight railway stations in Mumbai. Representing the Mumbai South-Central constituency, Shewale stated that the proposal, aimed at replacing the colonial-era names of these stations, will now be forwarded to the Central government for further consideration.
However, city historian Bharat Gothoskar has raised objections, noting that not all station names have colonial origins, with one deriving from a Marathi term meaning ‘grazing land.’
The list of local railway stations slated for renaming in Mumbai includes Curry Road, Sandhurst Road, Cotton Green, Dockyard Road, and Kings Circle stations on the Central Railway network.
Shewale’s proposed new names for these stations are Lalbaug, Dongari, Kalachowki, Mazgaon, and Tirthkar Parshwanath. Additionally, Marine Lines, Charni Road, and Mumbai Central stations on the Western Railway network are proposed to be renamed as Mumbadevi, Girgaon, and Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth stations, respectively.
Regarding the renaming initiative, Mumbai Central Station is proposed to be renamed after philanthropist Jagannath Shankar Seth. Curry Road may become Lalbagh, Sandhurst Road may change to Dongri, Marine Lines might be called Mumbadevi, and Charni Road could be renamed Girgaon. Cotton Green may be Black Chowki, Dockyard Road could become Mazgaon, and Kings Circle might be known as Tirthankara Parshvanath.
The Maharashtra government has already submitted a proposal to rename Mumbai Central Station to Nana Jagannath Shankarsheth Station to the Central government.
Shewale emphasized that there was public demand for renaming these stations, although Gothoskar argued against it, citing historical significance. He pointed out that names like Charni Road and Marine Lines hold no colonial connotations, with Charni Road being named after a Marathi term for a cattle grazing ground and Marine Lines after nearby barracks.
Previously, in 2017, the Union government renamed the Elphinstone Road station to Prabhadevi station and modified Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus to Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus.
