Former Australian cricketer Shane Watson was impressed by Rohit Sharma’s scintillating innings for MI in their last game of the Indian Premier League 2024. Watson felt that such an innings right before the T20 World Cup would prove to be a confidence booster for Rohit. The 37-year-old will lead India’s 15-member squad in the marquee tournament which will be co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies from June 2. Rohit needed to find his mojo back and he produced a blitzy knock of 68 runs against LSG at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on May 17, Friday.
While speaking to Jio Cinema, Watson heaped praise on Rohit for roaring back to form after a little bit of a lull in the last 6 games for MI. Watson mentioned that such an innings was a great way to get into preparation mode for a marquee tournament like the T20 World Cup.
“It’s a big confidence booster for Rohit Sharma for sure. He batted very nicely tonight knowing that he had a little bit of a dry spell in the previous 6 innings. So if he will be able to come out and have this freedom but also not pre-meditating as much as he had in the previous innings. So, just play with that full freedom which he has,” Watson said.
Rohit scored his 2nd fifty-plus score of the season against LSG after a hundred against CSK earlier in the tournament. Rohit got MI off to a flier as he took on the LSG bowlers from the word go. He reached the 50-run mark within just 28 balls. As wickets kept tumbling on one end, Rohit kept the scoreboard racing in MI’s 215-run chase. Rohit’s fiery knock was the only thing for the fans to cheer about as MI lost the match by 18 runs.
Will Rohit leave MI after IPL 2024?
Watson lauded Rohit’s flamboyant approach and how the Wankhede crowd acknowledged and applauded the star batter’s knock. Watson felt that it could possibly be Rohit’s last innings in MI colours at the Wankhede Stadium.
The Match Potentially marked the end of Rohit Sharma’s 14-year journey with MI, as rumors swirl about his future with franchise following Hardik Pandya’s controversial appointment as captain. Despite enduring a challenging season, Rohit ended as MI’s third-highest run-scorer.
“He has got shots all around the ground like he had on display. What a great way for him to be able to set off into the T20 World Cup with a performance like this. Also at home, at the Wankhede Stadium, knowing that it might be, it could be, his last game in MI colours at the Wankhede Stadium. His fans, there was so much support and so much love around the ground and there always is. You could hear the love around the ground. When he was batting and was on his way out as well,” Watson said.
Rohit had received a standing ovation from the Wankhede crowd as he walked off the field after scoring 68 runs from just 38 balls. He finished off the season as MI’s highest-run-getter with 427 runs in 14 innings at an average of 32.07.
